The government tells us we should all be doing our part during the current COVID-19 pandemic. As our economy slows, we are all required to tighten our belts. To help students, all enrolments in online Fortress Learning programs in March/April will receive a 20% subsidy. That’s 20% less out of your pocket to get started.
Just to be clear, that is until midnight on April 30 2020, unless we become fully subscribed before then, and it does NOT apply to the Fortress Lite program or extensions.
Let's start with a few words about doing your TAE during COVID-19
We prefer to work with our students, and experience tells us that even in the best of worlds our students are very much caught between a world of competing demands, being pulled this way and that. Their circumstances change rapidly and frequently, and we have learned how to bend and adjust with them, and for them.
In the current situation, we know that our students are experiencing additional demands, and additional uncertainties. We asked them what they need. The response was surprisingly simple, and is perhaps best captured in this comment from a current student who is facing redundancy if this situation does not improve quickly:
Don’t change. Actually, the best thing you can do is just keep doing what you do.
There’s already enough things changing. We just need to know you will be there when we need you to be. We always knew you cared, so just keep doing that.
So, that is what we will keep doing, and it is what we will continue doing with you when you decide that we are a good fit.
You see, no matter what is happening ‘out there’ our focus is always going to be with you. We believe that amid the horrible things that are happening at the moment, there are also opportunities for people who wish to take them. Thinking bigger, more nationally, I actually believe it is a responsibility. This will end, and at that time there will be so many opportunities awaiting those who are prepared. Thinking bigger, I actually believe it is a responsbility for us to use this time to prepare ourselves. This will end, and when it does our nation will depend on people being equipped with the skills needed to get things moving, and get things moving quickly. For many of us, that means getting equipped with new skills. The ability to equip others with new skills is going to be very much a key to our nation’s recovery.

There are so many What ifs? Here are some that we know about.
What if …. I get locked down and cannot access other people for the couple of assignments that need other people?
The first thing is to let us know. We’ll guide you on which bits of the course to keep doing – most people will be able to get 13 out the 14 assessment tasks done. Get those done, then hit pause, and come back to finish of the last bits when you are able.
What if … I get sick, or someone else gets sick and I have to look after them?
Hit pause. We’ll let you defer for 3 months. No cost.
What if … I get everything done except the delivery to groups?
Hit pause. If you have done everything other than the bits that involve other people, we’ll let you defer for 6 months. No cost.
What if … I get started but then lose confidence and change my mind?
If it is in the first 30 days, then you simply withdraw you will get a full refund. Beyond 30 days, we will charge you a Daily Rate for each day of your enrolment. We find this makes things fair. The Daily Rate is shown on our Course Fees page.
What if … I have registered with Centrelink. Can I still do it?
Our Cert IV TAE, and the TAE Skill Sets, are all registered with Centrelink so people receiving Centrelink services can do them.
What if … Fortress goes broke?
We won’t. We know there are lots of training organisations who will be struggling now because they need to keep getting more students to keep their doors open, but we are not like that. Our business model means we do charge a bit more than some of the ones who market more aggressively, but this means we have fewer students, to whom we can provide a quality service that we know helps them to succeed. Our business model is also the reason we have been able to reduce fees by 20% to assist people who are finding cash a bit tight at the moment, but without reducing our service standards.
What if … I want to see what my course might involve so I have a better idea of whether it will be possible?
Good idea. The first thing we do with every student is develop a Plan. Because it is such a good way for people to see what they are ‘in for’ we like doing it with inquiring people as well. If you’d like us to complete a Plan for your situation, complete the form in the Download More Information tab a little further down this page. We know that it will answer lots of your questions, give you more certainty and help you make a more informed decision, and with confidence.
What if … a job opportunity comes up and I have not finished everything. Can I get a certificate?
Yes. You do not need to complete the entire program before we issue you a credential. If you find yourself with an opportunity, and having completed some of the Cert IV TAE is going to give you the edge, then let us know and we can issue a Statement of Attainment to show your prospective employer what you have done. One thing employers will be looking for is not just what people have done before COVID-19, but how have they spent their time during this crisis: is this person someone who will rise to a challenge?
What if … I have a different question that has not been answered here?

You might be wondering if the current need for social distancing and lockdowns means you will even be able to DO your Cert IV TAE.
Yes, you will need other people.
When most people think about a course with Training & Assessment in its title, they naturally presume that there is a lot of training & assessing, and that it will involve lots of people being needed and lots of times.
But it is not actually like that.
Of the 14 assessment tasks in the Fortress Cert IV TAE, only 1 requires that you have a group of 8 people. 3 others require that you have one (or maybe 2) other people. That means more than 70% of the course can be done individually, on your own, at home, and with our support.
Of the others, only a part of each of them directly involves other people. The one most people seem to focus on is the group delivery. Yes, you will need to have a group of 8 people, but before you get to that, you will need to prepare the sessions that you will deliver. The preparations do not need other people.
What we are getting at here is that a great deal of the course can be done without needing physical access to other people, and if you are at home with some extra time on your hands, then this is actually a terrific opportunity for you to get it done.
If you are left with just those couple of things to do that need other people, and cannot access those people, then you will be able to hit the pause button and defer.
If you are part of the Zoom 2 U program, you will likely be able to do most, if not all, of those things as part of the Block sessions.
That way, you can keep moving forwards with confidence, knowing that it is not going to be a case of all or nothing.

One Qualification - Three Pathways
We offer our students three different ways to undertake the Cert IV TAE.
First, think of QANTAS and Jetstar (although probably not the best example given the COVID situation). QANTAS offers a premium product, with its subsidiary Jetstar offering a budget product. Both airlines share the same owner, and domestically, they share many of the same flight paths. If I want to travel from one Australian capital to another, either one will get me there. But, whereas one will have more flexible ticketing options, a bit more room, additional luggage allowance, better meals, the other will not.
Just like QANTAS knew that not all travellers would be needing the same routes or wanting the same luggage allowance we know that not all of our students will be needing the same pathway or wanting the same level of service to complete their TAE Cert IV.
That’s why we have Fortress Learning, Fortress Lite and Zoom 2 U
Where Fortress Learning’s online Cert IV TAE is founded on lots of support, Fortress Lite provides a way for people who do not want or need much support to complete their Cert IV TAE online, with more independence and lower fees. For those more interested in a Face to Face alternative, then Zoom 2 U is the way to go.

We start by developing a Personal Learning Plan for you, and based on your own experience and current position. We will work with you, and be with you from the beginning to end. We will assist you via rapid email and phone support. We will initiate contact with you, and you will be working in a supported environment through the entire program.
We start by providing you with access to all of the learning and assessment resources that Fortress Learning students receive. You then work independently through the program, and as you complete the assessable tasks for each of the 3 Fields of Study (Design, Deliver, Assess), you submit that work for assessment. We won’t leave you in the dark. We know that once you are underway, making you wait for weeks or months for an email or a phone call for your marking to be reviewed is not just going to lower your motivation and disrupt your learning, it is probably going to make you very frustrated and delay your progress.
Our students are very busy people with narrow windows of opportunity to study. If you are like them, then when one of those windows opens, you’ll want to make the most of it and you’ll rely on us to help with that.
That’s why you can expect timely responses, no matter which program you are part of. You may have noticed from the information above that our marking, email and phone response times are pretty good – and certainly something that our students appreciate.
Actually, the figures above are what we call ‘external measures’. Our ‘internal measures’ are even stricter (eg, 80% of marking is done within 2 business days…) and when we have trouble meeting our internal measures, we know it is time to slow new enrolments to make sure we maintain our promise to current students. That’s because we are not driven by the pursuit of more students at the expense of lower standards.

There’s a few others, but these seem to be the main ones that keep our students motivated rather than waiting and wondering.
What avenues for support are there?
There are essentially five components to the Fortress Learning programs, with the precise combination depending on which particular program you choose:
- your Dashboard – where all of your assessment materials will be uploaded and feedback recorded
- your Resource Space – where all of the learning materials are provided
- the Facebook Discussion Group – where students engage with each other and their Trainer/s
- the Virtual Classroom – webinars that target the practical skills of designing, delivering and assessing training.
- Online Chat – where you can seek assistance from directly within your Dashboard
There are Virtual Classroom sessions scheduled for most weeks, depending on demand.
Each Virtual Classroom session will run for about 90 minutes and will specifically target the practical skills of designing, delivering and assessing training. You can expect that each class will include a combination of Tell, Show and Do activities that will assist you in gaining the skills required to complete each of your Cert IV TAE Assignments.
The sessions are repeated – which means that you can participate in the same session as many times as you like.
Sessions will be recorded, and made available through your TAE Cert IV Resource Space. Fortress Lite students will have access to the recordings, but cannot attend live sessions.
The combination of high-rotation and recorded sessions means you can access, through an online face-to-face platform, the support you need to develop your practical skills as a Trainer/Assessor.
Fortress Learning students can register for sessions from within their TAE Cert IV Resource Space. All sessions are run using Zoom.
The central focus of the TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment is the learner and the learning process. You will learn how to:
- Create a meaningful learning environment which includes the application of inclusive work practices, responsiveness to diversity, developing a culture that supports learning, ensuring a safe and healthy learning environment, developing and maintaining knowledge of the Vocational Education and Training system, maintaining currency.
- Design learning processes and learning products that enable the learner to learn.
- Manage, guide, facilitate and monitor the learning process and provide meaningful learning experiences, including to those with language, literacy and numeracy support needs.
- Measure progress in learning and judging whether competence has been demonstrated.
Unlike previous Certificate IV in Training & Assessment qualifications, the latest TAE40116 requires people entering the program to be able to:
demonstrate vocational competency in their proposed teaching and assessing area. Vocational competency is defined as broad industry knowledge and experience, and may include, but is not limited to, holding a relevant unit of competency or qualification.
How do I do that?
For most people, it will simply be a matter of providing a copy of some other qualification, skill set, or statement of attainment. If you do not possess another qualification, then we would require you to provide a CV that shows your broad industry knowledge and experience, combined with a Position Description and Third Party Report from someone who can attest to your experience.
Experience tells us that most experienced professionals usually take about 6 months to complete their program. These people are usually working full-time and juggling families, pets, holidays and all the other things that seem to complicate our lives; they would usually take a night or two each week to work on their program, and the occasional Saturday or Sunday….the lucky ones also get some time to do it at work!
Our quick response times also helps to reduce the total time that it might otherwise take and make 6 months achievable; after all, getting your marking done in less than 4 days is going to make the whole thing a lot quicker than if it took weeks or months. (If you want to look more closely at this, then have a read of this: How long your Cert IV TAE takes depends on marking times. It will show you how much time you could end up wasting just sitting around if your chosen RTO takes not just a few days but 4 weeks to get your marking done.).
This graph shows the percentage of our graduates who took different lengths of time to complete. The median duration sits between 5 and 6 months.
Because of that, most people entering the Fortress Learning program will start with an enrolment duration of 6 months, and then if you need to extend beyond that there are options to extend. Fortress Lite students can expect to take 3-4 months for each of the three Fields of Study.
Regardless of which program you choose, it is your rate of progress that will ultimately determine how long it will take you.
How long is it meant to take?
The Australian Qualifications Framework publishes what they believe is a good indication of how long different courses should take. These are called the Volume of Learning Indicators, and they suggest that a Certificate 4 level qualification should take 600-1200 hours.
What does that mean per week?
If you enrol in a 12 month program, then using the above you could expect to take 10-45 hours a week. Obviously, for a 6 month program, it would be more.
Does it really take that long?
Experience tells us that people entering our programs are not blank slates. They bring a range of knowledge and experience, and that includes the ability and desire to learn. Even for those who are not seeking any Recognition of Prior Learning, the above graph shows that the time it takes is closer to the lower end of the range.
While it differs for different people, we find that successful students usually dedicate a night or two a week to their studies, and then a Saturday or Sunday every 2-3 weeks.
The above graph shows that about 20% of all students complete in 3 months or less.
The fee will depend on which program you choose.
Fortress Lite students will automatically be provided 12 months within which to complete the entire program.
Fortress Learning students will usually start with a 6 month enrolment and then extend on that time if required – there is a fee to extend, but it generally works out less costly than paying for time that you may not end up needing. (The ‘How long will it take’ tab above shows how long most people take.)
Some people ask why we have shorter enrolment durations than other training organisations. There are two reasons:
- Our students are motivated and are keen to get the job done
- Because of our quick turnaround times, you won’t find your enrolment period being eaten up waiting for weeks/months every time you need us to mark something, reply to an email or answer the phone. (Consider this: we’ll take less than a week to mark your work. Imagine how much longer your enrolment period would need to be if we kept you waiting for weeks/months to get stuff done…).

The Units of Study
The TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment involves ten Units of Competency, of which there is one Elective unit.
The Fortress Learning Cert IV TAE integrates the 10 units into three Fields of Study that experience tells us produce well-rounded and capable practitioners.
Both the Fortress Learning and Fortress Lite TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment programs designed around three Fields of Study:
Field 1: Design – this will enable you to:
Develop competencies that will enable you to use training packages and accredited courses in the context of a range of organisational needs.
Learn how to conceptualise, design, develop and evaluate learning programs to meet the needs of identified learners.
Field 2: Deliver – this will enable you to:
Develop competencies that will allow you to deliver training in a range of workplace contexts. This includes individual and group instruction, planning the presentation and reviewing the presentation.
Develop skills that help you to better meet the needs of the growing number of Australians who lack the desired levels of literacy and numeracy.
Identify the particular needs of a learner, the demands of some training, and devise strategies to enable the learner to bridge the gap between the two.
Field 3: Assess – this will enable you to:
Develop competencies that will enable you to contribute to the assessment process, plan and organise assessment activities and processes including Recognition of Prior Learning.
Assess the competence of a candidate.
Participate in the assessment validation process.
